What is a domain name

What is a domain name? and Why is this relevant to my email address?

The domain name is the part of your email address after the @ sign

e.g If the email address is fred@smithjones.co.uk then the domain name is
smithjones.co.uk

This is also a website address so you could attempt to visit it using internet explorer go to www.smithjones.co.uk

You can also check if Webmail or Hotmail is available for the email by trying to look at smithjones.co.uk/webmail or webmail.smithjones.co.uk

Any email for any domain name has to be routed to a mail server either for the contained website address or another mail server

The user then looks at the emails via Webmail or hotmail, or using Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express or Live Mail which is collected using pop3 settings directly to the users computer
