This can happen with Live Messenger without warning as there is an error in some versions of Messenger.
So we suggest back up your contacts on a regular basis or whenever you make a change
To do this :-
1. Open Windows Live Messenger
2. Click Menu -> Contacts
3. Click on \”Save instant messaging contacts\”
4. Select a folder to save and enter the file name
